Spc. Anthony C. Owens

Army SPC Anthony C. Owens, 21, of Conway, SC, died on February 1, 2006.

Owens was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms fire and grenades.  He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Ft. Campbell, KY.

A fellow solider, SFC Phil Blaisdell, who was with Owens the day of the attack stated:

We were attacked and SPC Owens showed no fear.  He was separated from his squad and ran through a hail of enemy gunfire to his team’s position to assist them in returning fire and establishing a support by fire for the assault team.  Later on he stacked on a door, knowing enemy personnel were inside and entered the building.  He is a hero and saved lives that day in Rushdi-Mulla.
